Out of A Tornado Rises A Bright Future...
After, the 1970's addition to the former Roosevelt Senior High School building, the junior high students were moved to this building and the Lincoln School, after 100 years of service was abandoned. In following the original property grant argeement, Lincoln School and land reverted back a descendant of C.J. Reynolds, Dr. Catherine Logan. Dr. Logan practiced medicine in the Monticello area in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Due to her interest in physical therapy, she hired an architect to assist her in reconfiguring the Lincoln School into a physical therapy center. The 1974 Tornado destroyed the Lincoln School and ended her dream of creating a medical center.During the Monticello reconstruction, Dr. Logan allowed the City of Monticello to clear the rubble and use the land to create a family park. in the early 1990's, Dr. Logan's son, Clifford Boram, a Monticello resident and Friend of the Public Library, sold the "Lincoln Lot" to the Monticello-Union Township Public Library. On May 3, 1992, the Monticello-Union Public Library dedicated the current facility, leaving their original Carnegie Library Building on Bluff Street to the White County Historical Society. Today, The Monticello Public Library stands on the same ground that Lincoln/Monticello High School stood. With 57,000 books, 110 magazine titles, and over 3,400 video selections, the Monticello Public Library continues the tradition of serving the educational needs of the community.
